I LOVE ASTORIA!!!

Published by lovesmehendi at 9:31 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Hello Everyone!

I saw this site, and it looked great! I figure– why not write about the things you love?

So– I LOVE Astoria! Astoria is the Northewestern Part of Queens. Queens is a borough of New York City. I love Astoria because it is a great community to live in. I emphasize community. It has a ’small town’ feel to it, however, it’s still busy and interesting enough to keep me interested.

It’s also conveniently located in relation to Manhattan, or what people call New York City. Manhattan is where most of us here work and do business. I went to graduate school in Manhattan, and most of my jobs have been located in Manhattan. I do not drive, so I use New York City Mass Transportation (MTA) to get wherever I need to go. Astoria has been great because there are several train and bus lines that can get you to Manhattan. Most people tend to use the N, W, or R train lines. There is also The E, V, and G lines in the lower part of Astoria. There is the M60 bus, which runs across Astoria Boulevard from La Guardia Airport, straight through the Triboro Bridge and across 125th Street, Harlem, in Manhattan. From 125th Street, one can transfer to the 4,5,6 Train, 1,2,3 Lines, B,F,D Trains, or the A,C Lines at different points crosstown on 125th Street. There are so many ways you can get to Manhattan from Astoria!

But back to Astoria. Astoria has gererally been a mostly Greek community. Despite this, Astoria is quite diverse. You can see it whenever you are walking in various parts of Astoria– it feels as though you are walking across different continents! You can especially see this if you walk down Steinway Street. Start off at Ditmars Boulevard, which is mostly Greek and Italian families, head down to 25th and 28th Aves which have many Egyptian and Arabic shops, restaurants, and Hooka cafes (Hookas are water pipes for smoking tobacco). 30th Ave has many Greek Restaurants again, but in and around there are many places to go shopping. Closer to Broadway and 36th Ave there has been a growing Brazilian and Portuguese community that has grown in this part of Astoria. But this is not ’solid’– All of these different shops and communities are interspersed throughout the whole of Astoria!

One of my favorite things about living in Astoria is that we have access to one of the best parks in the city — Astoria Park! Astoria Park runs along Shore Drive, Ditmars Boulevard and 19th Street, and and all the way down almost to Astoria Boulevard / Hoyt Avenue. It’s a lovely park that sits along the East River, has a lot of green space, walking paths, benches, and even a Running / Walking Track. Adjacent to are Tennis Courts that you can have access to if you get a permit from the Parks and Recreation Department. Astoria also has an Olympic Sized pool! I love to sit in the park on the grass, soak up some sun, read a book, or work on my knitting or crochet.

More on Astoria and cool things going on in and around NYC!

I hope you come back, or at least come to visit Astoria!

 Hellgate Bridge, Astoria, NY

This is Hellgate Bridge. It is one of the greatest landmarks of Astoria, and can be seen in all its grandeur when you go to Astoria Park!

thanks so much! i was worried was being tooo rambly on it. but i really do love astoria so it’s easy for me to get carried away and give people information on it. actually, Manhattan has a lot of exciting things and restaurants and cuisines from around the world, but Astoria has that small town feel to it, it’s less crowded, less pretentious, and has really good salt of the earth people. thanks so much for looking! come back again!
